Saudi Arabia — Visa & Work Services
Overview
Saudi Arabia — the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) — is the Arab world’s largest economy and one of the world’s top oil producers. Under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is undergoing a massive transformation: expanding tourism, entertainment, and non-oil sectors, and actively recruiting international talent including professionals from Nigeria and Africa.
🛂 Tourist / Visit Visa
- e-Visa (Tourist Visa): Saudi Arabia launched tourist e-Visas in 2019, open to 49+ nationalities — Nigerian passport holders are eligible.
- Apply at https://visa.visitsaudi.com. Cost: SAR 535 (approx. USD 143) including insurance.
- Duration: Multiple-entry, 1-year validity, stay up to 90 days per visit (total 180 days/year).
- Requirements: Valid passport (6+ months), passport photo, return ticket (recommended), hotel booking, debit/credit card for payment.
- Umrah & Hajj Visa: For Muslim pilgrims. Apply through licensed Hajj/Umrah travel agents. Separate from tourist visa. Umrah visa: usually 30–90 days.
- Business Visa: Available through Saudi embassies with invitation from a Saudi company.
🎓 Student / Study Visa
- Saudi Arabia offers scholarship opportunities for international students at its world-class universities.
- King Abdullah Scholarship Programme (KASP) & KSA Government Scholarships: Full scholarships (tuition + accommodation + stipend) for outstanding international students. Open to Nigerians. Apply via the Saudi Cultural Attaché in Nigeria.
- Top Institutions: King Abdulaziz University (Jeddah), King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (Dhahran), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), King Saud University (Riyadh).
- Requirements: Acceptance letter, valid passport, passport photos, medical certificate, police clearance, financial proof (if self-funded), academic transcripts, vaccination records (yellow fever, meningitis required).
- Student visa is tied to the institution. Students must register at the Ministry of Interior upon arrival.
💼 Work Visa / Iqama (Residence Permit)
- All foreign workers require employer sponsorship. The work visa (entry visa) is arranged by the Saudi employer.
- Process: Saudi employer applies for work visa at MOFA → employee receives work visa → enters Saudi Arabia → employer obtains Iqama (residence permit) within 90 days of arrival.
- Iqama: Saudi residence permit, renewed annually. Required for all daily activities (banking, driving, healthcare).
- Requirements: Employment contract (Saudi Labour Law compliant), valid passport, passport photos, medical fitness test (done in Saudi Arabia or at Saudi-approved clinic in Nigeria), attested academic credentials, police clearance, vaccination records (meningitis mandatory for some professions).
- Certificate Attestation for Nigerians: Must attest Nigerian certificates through: 1) Awarding institution, 2) Federal Ministry of Education, 3) Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria, 4) Saudi Embassy Nigeria.
- In-demand professions: Healthcare (doctors, nurses, pharmacists — actively recruited), Construction (engineers, project managers), IT & Cybersecurity, Education (teachers), Retail & Hospitality (Vision 2030 tourism boom), Oil & Gas.
- Saudi Vision 2030: Massive construction projects (NEOM mega-city, Red Sea Project, Diriyah Gate) creating enormous demand for African and international professionals.
🌟 Premium Residency (Green Card)
- Saudi Arabia launched a Premium Residency scheme in 2019 — permanent or temporary residency WITHOUT employer sponsorship.
- Permanent Premium Residency: One-time fee of SAR 800,000 (approx. USD 213,000).
- Annual Premium Residency: SAR 100,000/year (approx. USD 26,700).
- Holders can work, invest, and reside freely without a kafeel (sponsor).
- Skills-Based Premium Residency: Being expanded to attract top talent in medicine, IT, engineering, sports, and arts — at reduced or waived fees.
👨👩👧 Family / Dependent Visa
- Iqama holders earning SAR 4,000+/month can sponsor immediate family (spouse and children under 18).
- Documents: Sponsor’s Iqama, marriage certificate (attested), children’s birth certificates, salary certificate, accommodation proof.
- Each dependent requires an annual fee payment (SAR 400/month per dependent for expats with Saudi employees — check current rates as they change).
🏛️ Citizenship
- By Birth: Saudi Arabia follows strict jus sanguinis. Only children born to Saudi fathers are citizens. Children born in Saudi Arabia to foreign parents have no automatic citizenship.
- By Naturalization: General naturalization is extremely rare and typically restricted to spouses of Saudi citizens (10 years of marriage required), children of Saudi mothers (application after 18), or those granted citizenship by Royal Decree for exceptional services to the Kingdom.
- By Royal Decree: Saudi citizenship has been granted to select athletes, scientists, investors, and individuals of Arab origin. This is not a standard application process.
- Practical Alternative: The Premium Residency (Green Card) provides the most stable long-term option for foreigners who want to live and work in Saudi Arabia without ongoing employer dependency.
🕌 Hajj & Umrah (Religious Visas for Nigerian Muslims)
- Nigeria has one of the largest Hajj quotas in the world (approximately 95,000 pilgrims/year).
- Hajj Visa: Apply through NAHCON (National Hajj Commission of Nigeria) or approved private Hajj tour operators. Typically open January–March each year.
- Umrah Visa: Apply year-round through any licensed Saudi-approved Umrah travel agency in Nigeria. Usually processed in 3–5 days.
🇳🇬 Nigeria-Specific Notes
- Certificate attestation chain must be complete before job applications or work visa processing.
- Meningitis vaccination (ACWY) is mandatory for Hajj, Umrah, and most work visas.
- Nigerians are a significant expat community in Saudi Arabia — especially in healthcare and construction.
- Saudi Arabia does NOT have income tax — take-home salary is full salary.
