🛂 Tourist / Visit Visa
- Visa Required: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ghana. Apply at the Ghana Embassy or via the GIS (Ghana Immigration Service) online portal at https://apply.ghanaimmigration.gov.gh.
- ECOWAS Citizens (including Nigerians): Can enter visa-free for up to 90 days with valid travel documents under the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol.
- Nigerian Citizens: NO VISA REQUIRED — enter with valid Nigerian passport or national ID. Free movement applies.
- Other Nationalities: Visa on arrival available at Kotoka International Airport (Accra) for some nationalities. Tourist visa fee: USD 100–150.
- Requirements (non-ECOWAS): Valid passport, completed form, 2 photos, yellow fever certificate (required), return ticket, hotel booking, bank statement, travel insurance.
🎓 Student / Study Visa
- Must be admitted to a Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)-accredited institution.
- Top Universities: University of Ghana (Legon), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST), Ashesi University, University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA).
- Requirements: Admission letter, valid passport, passport photos, yellow fever certificate, financial proof (USD 3,000+/year), medical certificate, police clearance, academic transcripts.
- Student visa is issued for 1 year and renewable at GIS.
- Tuition: USD 2,500–8,000/year depending on institution and program.
💼 Work Permit (Quota / Non-Quota)
- Foreign nationals need a Work Permit before they can legally work in Ghana.
- Quota Employees: Employer must have a work permit quota approved by the Ghana Immigration Service.
- Non-Quota: Specialists in critical skills may apply outside the quota system.
- Requirements: Employment contract, company registration (Ghana), academic qualifications (certified), police clearance, passport, passport photos, processing fee (GHS 1,500–5,000+).
- Work permits are valid for 1–2 years and tied to the specific employer.
🏠 Investor / Business Visa
- Ghana offers an Investor Permit for those who invest USD 10,000+ (trading) or USD 50,000+ (manufacturing/services).
- Processing via Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).
🏛️ Citizenship
- By Birth: Ghana follows jus sanguinis. Children born to at least one Ghanaian parent are citizens regardless of birthplace.
- The Joseph Project / Right of Abode: Ghana offers the Joseph Project for African Americans and diaspora Africans to return and obtain citizenship or indefinite right of abode.
- By Naturalization: Requires 5 years of continuous legal residence. Must demonstrate financial stability, good character, and basic English language ability. Dual citizenship permitted.
- By Registration (Diaspora): Persons of Ghanaian descent may register for citizenship through the Diaspora Affairs office.
