The Schengen Area comprises 27 European countries that have abolished internal border controls, allowing free movement between them with a single visa. • Visa Fee: EUR 90 (adults), EUR 45 (children 6–12), Free (children under 6).

🎓 National (Long-Stay) Visa — Type D: Student & Work
Each Schengen country also issues its own National Visa (Type D) for stays over 90 days:

• Germany (Student): Blocked account (Sperrkonto) of EUR 11,904/year (2024). IELTS/TestDaF for English/German programs. Apply at German Embassy Lagos or Abuja. APS certificate required for Nigerian applicants (academic evaluation).
• France (Student): Apply via Campus France portal (CampusFrance Nigeria). Monthly funds of EUR 615+ required. French language proficiency (DELF/DALF) for French-taught programs. English programs also available.
• Netherlands (Student): Dutch universities require English proficiency (IELTS 6.5+). Proof of EUR 11,200+/year. MVV (provisional residence permit) required before entry.
• Portugal: Increasingly popular with Nigerians. Student visa requires EUR 760/month financial proof. Portugal D7 Passive Income Visa (EUR 760+/month income) also available for remote workers.
• Spain: Student and work visas available. Spanish language programs (no IELTS required for Spanish-taught programs). Financial requirement: EUR 600/month.

• Citizenship by Naturalization: Most EU countries require 5–10 years of continuous legal residence. Germany reduced its requirement to 5 years (3 for outstanding contributions) in 2024. Dual citizenship is increasingly permitted.
• Germany: 5 years PR → citizenship. From 2024, dual citizenship permitted (Nigerians can keep their passport!)
• Portugal: 5 years legal residence → citizenship. Portuguese Golden Visa (real estate/investment pathway) available.
• France: 5 years residence → citizenship. Must demonstrate French language proficiency (B1 level).
• By Birth: Most EU countries follow jus sanguinis. Germany, France, Spain, and some others offer jus soli with conditions (child must be born to long-term resident parents).
