• Spousal PR: After 5 years of marriage to a SA citizen/PR. Must prove genuine relationship.
• Refugee-based PR: After 5 years of refugee status.
• Exceptional Skills / Extraordinary Achievement: Exceptional contributors may be granted PR outside the standard timeline.

🏛️ Citizenship

• By Birth (Jus Soli with conditions): Children born in South Africa are citizens if at least one parent is a SA citizen or permanent resident at the time of birth.
• By Descent: Children born outside SA to SA citizen parents may acquire citizenship by descent (one generation only).
• By Naturalization: After 5 years as a Permanent Resident (total ~10 years from first visa). Must have a clean criminal record, be domiciled in SA, renounce prior citizenship (SA generally does not allow dual citizenship — exceptions exist for minor children and some special cases).
• Important Note: South Africa generally requires renunciation of prior citizenship upon naturalization.
