The common belief is that a UK limited company is a paperwork-light way to hold a business from overseas. That stopped being true on 18 November 2025. Companies House identity verification is now a legal requirement for anyone setting up, running, owning or controlling a UK company, wherever in the world they live, and the transition period ends in November 2026.

Who Companies House identity verification actually catches

Three groups are in scope today: new directors and people with significant control, existing directors and PSCs, and members of a limited liability partnership. From no earlier than November 2026 it extends to anyone who files documents at Companies House, and later to corporate directors and corporate members.

The 18 November 2025 date was a start line, not a deadline. Each existing director’s personal due date is pegged to the company’s next confirmation statement. Around six to seven million directors and PSCs sit inside that window, and most of them will discover it the week their statement is due.

The two ways to do it from abroad

You can verify directly with Companies House through GOV.UK One Login, using a passport or other ID document. Or you can verify through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider: an anti-money-laundering supervised firm such as a company formation agent, solicitor or accountant. The assurance standard is identical either way.

Once verified, you receive a Companies House personal code. That code is what you supply at incorporation or when you are appointed. Without it, the appointment does not complete.

Rafael, a founder in São Paulo running a software business through a London-registered company he has never visited, assumed his UK accountant handled filings on his behalf and that his own identity sat outside the process. It does not. The obligation attaches to him personally as a director, not to the agent who files for him.

What non-compliance costs

Companies House is explicit. Fail to comply on time and “you’ll be committing an offence”, with consequences that include a financial penalty. Beyond the fine, the practical damage lands first: you will not be able to make any filings for your company, and you cannot start a new one.

For an overseas founder, that means a frozen entity. No confirmation statement, no changes of director, no clean company record for the bank or the acquirer reading your file. Verification takes minutes. Reversing a blocked company takes months.

Does Companies House identity verification apply if I live outside the UK?
Yes. The requirement follows the role, not your country of residence, so overseas directors and PSCs must verify.

Can my accountant verify on my behalf?
An Authorised Corporate Service Provider can carry out the check, but you must be the person verified. Nobody can be verified in your place.

What is the deadline for an existing director?
Your due date is tied to the company’s next confirmation statement, and the transition period runs to November 2026.

What happens if I ignore it?
You commit an offence, risk a financial penalty, and lose the ability to file for or incorporate a company.

Most people meet the deadline and lose anyway, because they started writing in September. The Chevening Scholarship 2027 cycle opens at 11:00 UTC on 4 August 2026 and closes at 11:00 UTC on 6 October. That is roughly nine weeks of writing window for a fully funded UK master’s, four essays, three referees and a course shortlist. The people who win are drafting in July.

Chevening Scholarship 2027: the dates that matter

Applications open on 4 August 2026 and close on 6 October 2026, both at 11:00 UTC. The programme’s own timeline is blunt about the cut-off: “You will not be able to access the online application system after this date.”

Everything after that runs long. Eligibility sifting begins in October. Independent reading committees assess applications from mid-October through January 2027. Shortlisted candidates hear in mid-February 2027, interviews at British embassies run March to April, and results land from mid-June. The final gate is 8 July 2027, when you must submit at least one unconditional UK university offer.

Read that last date twice. The scholarship does not find you a course.

What to build before applications open

You have four weeks before the portal opens. Spend them on the parts that cannot be rushed. Confirm you meet the work experience requirement and count the hours honestly. Choose three eligible UK master’s courses and know why each one, specifically, follows from what you have already done.

Line up two referees now and tell them the timeline. Then draft the four essays: leadership, networking, studying in the UK, career plan. Write them ugly first. A Chevening essay fails when it describes a job rather than a decision, and every applicant needs several passes to notice the difference.

Where strong candidates sink

Linh, a communications officer in Hanoi with seven years behind her, wrote four polished essays about her employer’s achievements. Not one of them said what she personally decided, risked or changed. She was sifted out before interview. The reading committee is looking for the applicant, not the organisation.

The other reliable failure is the offer deadline. Candidates treat 8 July 2027 as a formality, apply to two competitive courses in March, and receive conditional offers that never turn unconditional in time. Here is the date that matters: 31 December 2026. The UK Graduate Route deadline splits two very different outcomes. Apply on or before it and you keep the full two-year post-study work visa. Apply on 1 January 2027 or later and the same permission lasts only 18 months, unless you hold a PhD. For anyone finishing a UK degree this year, that one line in the rules reshapes the final semester, the job hunt, and the timing of every form.

What actually changes on 1 January 2027

The Graduate Route lets international students stay and work after finishing a UK degree, with no employer sponsor needed. Today it runs for two years. From next January the standard grant drops. GOV.UK confirms the visa “will last 18 months” for applications made on or after 1 January 2027, while PhD holders keep three years. The cut is not retroactive. Any valid application decided under the current rules still gets the full two years, which is why the UK Graduate Route deadline has become the number every 2026 graduate is watching. Six months of extra work rights can decide whether you land a sponsored role before the visa runs out.

Who should file early, and who can wait

Timing depends on when your course ends. Priya, an Indian graduate wrapping a Manchester master’s in November, can apply the moment her university reports completion to the Home Office. She does not need to wait for the ceremony or the printed certificate. Students finishing in spring 2026 have room to spare. Autumn and winter finishers are the ones racing the clock. If your completion is reported in December, days count. Miss the window and you lose half a year of post-study time, plus leverage in salary talks with employers who want a longer runway. How to lock in the two-year visa

Three moves protect your position. First, confirm your completion date with your university now, not in December. Second, get your BRP or eVisa details and passport ready so the application does not stall. Third, budget for the fee and the health surcharge in advance. Apply from inside the UK, before your Student visa expires. Do not travel out and risk a gap. The rule reversal is real, but so is the escape hatch. File under the current rules and the shorter route never touches you.

1 July 2026. That is the day the UK Global Talent design visa pathway goes live, and it rewrites the rules for creative professionals who want to work in Britain. Product, graphic, industrial, digital and UX designers now have a dedicated endorsement route that never existed before. No employer has to sponsor you. There is no salary floor. If your portfolio is strong, this may be the cleanest path into the UK you find all year.

What the design route actually offers

The Global Talent visa has existed for years, but design never fit neatly inside its arts or tech categories. That gap is now closed. From 1 July 2026, a Design Industry endorsement sits alongside the arts and digital routes, covering product, graphic, industrial, digital, UX and even game design. The pull is simple. You do not need a job offer. You do not need a company to sponsor you. There is no minimum salary. You can switch employers, freelance, or start a business without asking permission. Endorsement asks you to prove you are “a leader or potential leader” in design, judged on real work rather than a payslip. For designers stuck behind sponsored routes, that freedom is rare.

Who clears the endorsement bar

Endorsement runs in two tiers. Exceptional Talent is for established designers with a substantial track record across at least two countries. Exceptional Promise is for early-career designers showing a developing record in one or more countries. Both ask for evidence: work that has been published, exhibited, distributed or applied commercially, plus proof you stayed active over the past five years. A São Paulo product designer with an internationally shared portfolio and a couple of award mentions would likely aim at the Promise tier, then graduate to full residency later. Letters from recognised design bodies carry weight. So does measurable impact, like a product shipped to millions. Weak applications lean on job titles. Strong ones show the work itself and the reach it earned.

How to file without wasting a slot

Design endorsement is a two-stage process. First the endorsing body reviews your evidence. Then, once endorsed, you apply for the visa itself. Fees and the health surcharge stack up, so budget before you start. Get your portfolio into a single, well-labelled document. Line up three referees early, because chasing letters is what stalls most cases. Match your evidence to the tier you claim, and do not overreach to Talent if your record is still growing. Keep every date and credit verifiable. Each grant runs up to five years, and time on it counts toward settlement, so a clean first application pays off for years. Rushing the evidence is the most common own goal.
