Study, Work & Live in Jordan

Overview
Jordan is a remarkable Arab kingdom in the heart of the Middle East, home to iconic wonders such as Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea. With a stable government, growing economy, and welcoming culture, Jordan attracts tourists, students, workers, and investors from across Africa and the world.

🛂 Tourist / Visit Visa

  • Visa on Arrival: Citizens of most countries, including Nigeria, can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport (Amman) and Aqaba airport. Fee: JOD 40 (approx. USD 56) — waived if staying 3+ nights at a hotel (Jordan Pass).
  • Jordan Pass: Combine your entry visa + Petra and 40+ attractions for USD 70–130. Available online at https://www.jordanpass.jo. Highly recommended!
  • e-Visa: Available at https://eservices.moi.gov.jo. Processing: 3–5 business days.
  • Nigerian Citizens: Eligible for visa on arrival. Requirements: valid passport (6+ months), return ticket, proof of accommodation, sufficient funds (approx. USD 50/day), passport photo, visa fee.
  • Duration: 30 days, extendable at the Ministry of Interior’s Civil Status & Passports Dept.

🎓 Student / Study Visa

  • Jordan has world-class universities attracting students from across Africa and the Arab world.
  • Apply for a student visa at the Jordanian Embassy before travelling, or through an institutional invitation.
  • Top Universities: University of Jordan, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), German Jordanian University, Al-Ahliyya Amman University.
  • Requirements: Acceptance letter from an accredited Jordanian university, valid passport, passport photos, completed visa application, proof of financial means (USD 5,000+/year), medical certificate (no HIV, TB), police clearance from home country, academic transcripts (attested), visa fee.
  • Upon arrival, register at the Civil Status & Passports Department for a Residence Permit within 30 days.
  • Tuition fees range from USD 3,000–8,000/year. Scholarships available through the Jordanian government and Arab Fund.
  • Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and engineering programs particularly popular among African students.

💼 Work Visa / Work Permit

  • Foreign nationals require a Work Permit sponsored by a Jordanian employer, issued by the Ministry of Labour.
  • Process: Employer applies for work permit approval → employee applies for work visa at Jordanian Embassy → enters Jordan → registers for Residence Permit within 30 days.
  • Requirements: Signed employment contract, work permit approval letter, valid passport (12+ months), passport photos, medical fitness certificate (done in Jordan), police clearance from home country, attested academic/professional certificates, health insurance.
  • Certain professions (teachers, engineers, doctors, IT professionals) are in high demand.
  • Work permits are for 1 year and renewable. Changing employers requires a new work permit.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family / Dependent Visa

  • Residents with valid Jordanian residence permits can sponsor immediate family members.
  • Documents: Sponsor’s residence permit and passport, marriage certificate (apostilled and officially translated to Arabic), children’s birth certificates, proof of financial means, accommodation proof, health insurance.
  • Dependent family members cannot work in Jordan without their own work permit.

🏛️ Citizenship

  • By Birth: Jordan follows jus sanguinis. Children born to Jordanian fathers are citizens regardless of birthplace. Children born to Jordanian mothers (and foreign fathers) may apply separately under special circumstances.
  • By Naturalization: Requires 15 years of continuous legal residence (4 years for Arab nationals). Applicants must be financially stable, have no criminal record, renounce prior citizenship, and speak Arabic. Naturalization is subject to royal approval and is rarely granted to non-Arabs.
  • By Marriage: A foreign woman married to a Jordanian man can apply after 3 years of marriage (with continuous residence). Foreign husbands of Jordanian women have extremely limited pathways.

🌟 Investment & Special Residency

  • Jordan offers an Investor Residence Permit for those investing USD 1 million+ in approved projects.
  • Special Economic Zones (e.g., Aqaba SEZ) offer business-friendly incentives for foreign investors.
