Study, Work, Live in Qatar
Overview
Qatar is a rapidly growing Gulf nation on the Arabian Peninsula, offering exciting opportunities for tourists, professionals, students, and families. It seamlessly blends ultramodern infrastructure with rich cultural heritage.
🛂 Tourist / Visit Visa
- Visa on Arrival: Citizens of 80+ countries (UK, USA, EU, Canada, Australia) receive a free 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for 30 days.
- Online e-Visa: Available via Hayya platform (https://www.hayya.qa). Apply at least 4 days before travel. Cost: Free or nominal fee.
- Requirements: Valid passport (min. 6 months validity), return ticket, proof of accommodation, sufficient funds.
- Nigerian Citizens: Must apply in advance via Qatar’s e-visa portal or through a Qatari sponsor. Processing: 3–7 business days. Documents: passport, photos, bank statement, hotel booking, return ticket.
🎓 Student / Study Visa
- Must obtain admission from a Qatar-approved institution (Qatar University, Carnegie Mellon Qatar, Georgetown, UCL Qatar, etc.).
- The institution sponsors your Student Residence Permit (not a separate visa category).
- Requirements: Original admission/acceptance letter, valid passport, attested academic certificates, medical fitness certificate, police clearance, 2 passport photos, proof of financial means.
- Residence permit is renewable annually for duration of studies.
- Part-time work allowed (up to 20 hrs/week during term, full-time during holidays).
💼 Work Visa
- Foreign nationals need a job offer from a Qatari employer who sponsors the work visa and residence permit (Iqama/QID).
- Process: Employer obtains work permit → employee enters on work visa → converts to QID within 30 days of arrival.
- Requirements: Signed employment contract, valid passport, medical fitness certificate (done in Qatar), police clearance certificate from home country (attested), academic credentials (attested by Ministry of Foreign Affairs), passport photos.
- Since 2020, workers can change jobs and leave Qatar without employer’s No Objection Certificate (NOC).
👨👩👧 Family / Dependent Visa
- Residents earning QAR 10,000+/month (QAR 7,000 if accommodation is provided) can sponsor spouse and children.
- Documents: Sponsor’s QID & employment contract, attested marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates, proof of accommodation, salary certificate.
🏛️ Citizenship
- By Birth: Qatar follows jus sanguinis (right of blood). Children of Qatari fathers automatically receive citizenship regardless of birthplace. Children of Qatari mothers and foreign fathers do not automatically qualify.
- By Naturalization: Must reside legally in Qatar for 25 consecutive years (10 years for Arab nationals). Must not hold another nationality, demonstrate financial independence, be of good moral character, and speak Arabic. Naturalization is rarely granted and decided at the Emir’s discretion.
